Workshop on Developing Alliances and Forming Advocacy Committees to Promote Women’s Role in Politics at the Local Level

AWCSW/Public Relations and Programs Department conducted a workshop with the cooperation of Sharek Youth Forum on developing alliances and forming advocacy committees to promote women’s role in politics at the local level. The participants were members of local bodies, women leaders, representatives of grass root organizations from 10 communities in Ramallah and Jenin Governorates. The three-day workshop was delivered in 14 hours in each Governorate. Ms. Etidal Jariri, Coordinator at TAWASOL Centers, illustrated the work procedures of TAWASOL and its membership in governorates which guarantees its continual effort to achieve gender equality in legislations and systems in order to encourage women’s involvement in various social, political, and economic activities. Therefore, she concluded that it’s essential to have a national strategy cares about women’s affairs.
Ms. Emtiaz Al-Mughrabi, Media Professional, talked about media effective role in representing women’s issues and influencing decision-makers to create a joint agenda directed toward promoting positive images of women’s role in politics and society.
In addition, Dr. Talib Awad clarified the role of women in elections by providing related statistics in general and explaining the quota system in particular that is used in Palestine and its neighbor countries. Dr. Talib asserted also that the quota system lifts women to occupy decision making positions.
Near the end of the workshop, participants stated a number of recommendations. The main one was directed to non-governmental organizations to target their efforts and programs toward serving social authentic needs and cooperating with other organizations and local communities and bodies to design these programs.
It’s worth mentioning, however, that this activity came within the framework of "Enhancing Palestinian Women's Participation in Public and Political Life" program that is funded by the United Nation Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women/UN.
